My name is Shelby and I live in Akita, Japan. I enjoy my job as an English teacher and traveling around Japan in my free time. I moved here in 2018 and I plan on staying here for a long time! I love how laid back and easy going life is in rural Japan. I can’t imagine leaving all of it behind anytime soon. After so many people telling me I should start a blog, I finally caved and started one. I hope to connect with people through this blog or just provide some information about Japan for those who are curious. Of course, my blog will talk about many different places in Japan, but mainly it will be about the North East region (the countryside) since this is where I live. I hope to spread awareness about how wonderful rural Japan can be, and how there’s more to Japan than just Tokyo. Unfortunately, the population of these rural cities is dwindling fast, and these unique places and experiences might be gone within the next few decades or so. For starters, I’d like to say that I’ve heard many good things about this onsen hotel. I’ve always wanted to try visiting an onsen, but my fear of being naked and sharing a hot bath with strangers got in the way. I figured this would be a great place for an introduction to onsens and how to use them, so Zach and I booked an overnight stay. This trip made me more comfortable with onsens and it exceeded my expectations. We had an amazing host who spoke incredible English and helped us from the time we checked in until we checked out. This place is insanely fancy. The staff really treats you like royalty and they do a great job at making this feel like a personal experience. This onsen hotel has only 10 guest rooms total, so it’s hard to book and it’s kind of pricey (about $300 per person). However, the five course meal that’s served along with the private onsen is worth every single penny. These are similar to kiritanpo, except it’s not cut. Our host told us that kiru in Japanese means “to cut,” hence the name kiritanpo. It contained eel and lots of vegetables. I love hot pots because the waiter lights it up in front of us and it continues to cook and stay hot while we eat. For every hotel I’ve eaten dinner at, this is always the main course. Rice, miso soup, hot tea, and local vegetables. The miso soup and tea aid digestion and helps with any stomach troubles. This course never disappoints! This is fish called himemasu or Kokanee Salmon, and it lives in Lake Towada. It was fresh caught the same day so it was crazy good. The sauce on top is an uni (sea urchin) sauce, which was slightly sweet. Another dish that melted in my mouth and took no effort to chew. The sauce was also delicious. The first sweet on the left is apple pound cake. This was the best out of the three in my opinion, but maybe I’m biased. In the middle was peach jelly, and on the right was this soft grape jelly. It was easy to bite into and the grape flavor was amazing. Dotonbori: A Symbol of Osaka Dotonbori is one of the most colorful places in Osaka and is the main tourist attraction in the city. The name Dotonbori refers to the street, as well as the canal that runs alongside it. The street is packed with bright neon signs and a plethora of restaurants, street food, and bars. Mine and Zach’s hotel was actually right in the middle of Dotonbori, so we had easy access to all the street food. It was also really nice seeing all neon lights from our window. What makes Dotonbori unique is the signs above the stores. Not only are they bright, but most of them are massive characters or huge replicas of food. It’s definitely a photo worthy spot! Another thing that makes Dotonbori so unique is the extroverted locals, which seriously elevated my experience here. Getting some street food while chatting with some of the chefs made the food taste that much better. In fact, one of the most memorable parts of this trip was socializing with the locals. There was a takoyaki stall right next to our hotel door, and Zach and I had multiple conversations with the man working the stall. We talked about a bunch of different things while he made takoyaki. Every morning when we walked out of the hotel to start our day, we would wave hello to each other. At the end of our days, Zach and I would find ourselves wondering if our friend would be there to chat for a bit before we went back to our room. Just next door to Dotonbori is a particularly long, covered shopping street called Shinsaibashi-suji. It’s crammed with everything you can imagine, like clothing stores, pastry shops, art stores, cafes, and more. Since I’m from Orlando and would religiously visit Universal Studios, I’m naturally going to compare both parks. Although smaller, USJ is a lot more fun compared to the one in Orlando in my opinion. I think the abundance of themed snacks and cute merchandise really added to my experience, as well as unique parts of the park (Nintendo World, Sesame Street, etc). For starters, there’s two separate areas in Orlando: Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure. For those who’ve visited these parks, imagine condensing everything down into just one park and taking away a few rides. This is basically USJ. As I was walking around, everything felt incredibly cramped together. I was a bit overwhelmed at first because I wanted to see and do everything, but quickly realized that most of the buildings were restaurants and shops. I eventually turned my attention to the rides and snacks, which were my biggest interest. Before Zach and I bought our tickets, we were trying to figure out the best time to go. According to USJ’s website, January and February are the least busy months. We ended up going on January 5th, on a normal weekday right after the holidays. However, it was BUSY. Some of the attraction wait times were between 2-6 hours. I can’t even imagine what it’s like during the busier months. Due to the extremely long lines, we ended up skipping the rides that were also in Orlando and tried to experience the ones only in USJ.
