Dreamination
Every year from the mid-November to early January, Peace Boulevard is lit up with 1.4 million lights. This is a festival called Dreamination, which combines the two words dream and illumination. The theme of the festival is different every year, but it was clear that the one I went to was a kind of fairytale theme. There were a lot of whimsical designs, and most of them were interactive. I was able to walk through some of the illuminations and even sit down inside of them. Some symbolize Hiroshima’s wish for peace, while others reflect Hiroshima’s kindness and compassion towards the world and others.
I wish I could talk about my most favorite illuminations, but honestly they were all my favorite. As I was walking down the street, I’d see one, admire it, take photos, then the next one would be more exciting than the last. This is was such a wholesome moment during my Hiroshima trip and I’m happy I planned it when this festival was happening. It really took me back to those fond memories when I was little and my parents would drive around neighborhoods to look at Christmas lights.
The fruit forest was really cute and actually had a few surprises. There were faces hidden in the trees, as well as fruits and different types of animals. I actually didn’t see some of the faces until I went through my photos the next day! I appreciated this quirky part of the festival and how it didn’t take itself too seriously.
One thing I saw a lot of in Hiroshima was the prefecture’s professional baseball team, Toyo Carp. The team colors are dark blue and red and the mascot is named “Slyly.” I saw toys and clothes being sold with his face on it all over Hiroshima. The Otagawa River flows through the city and is abundant with carp, which is how the team got its name. I wasn’t surprised to see an illumination dedicated to Toyo Carp. Hiroshima seems to have a lot of pride for their team!
