Yamagata
Yamagata Prefecture is another fantastic place to experience real, traditional Japan. There are many hidden gems, traditional villages, and historical sites here. The natural beauty in Yamagata is also something that should be talked about. There are over 100 hot springs here (some of the best in the country), as well as stunning mountain ranges. This prefecture is also known as the “fruit kingdom,” because an abundance of high quality fruit are produced here. However, Yamagata is widely known for its cherries. This prefecture is responsible for 70% of Japan’s cherry production! When cherry season arrives, people enjoy picking cherries at one of the many farms. There’s also cherry treats in just about every store.
Yamadera
Yamadera is a temple located in a mountain in Yamagata. It’s one of the most iconic symbols of the Tohoku Region. During the short hike up, there are plenty of shrines to stop by as well as temples and natural rock formations. The views at the very top are easily some of the best views I’ve seen in Japan!
Mount Haguro
This was a very strenuous but rewarding hike. Mount Haguro is one of the three holy mountains of Dewa (the region which is now Akita and Yamagata). Haguro is the easiest to climb and is home to some historical structures. It was amazing being able to see and learn about things that have been around for centuries.
