Hiroshima
Hiroshima may be widely known as the victim of the world’s first nuclear attack, but it’s much more than that. There are endless things to see and do, such as taking a day trip to one of the many islands that surround the prefecture. Miyajima is the most visited place in Hiroshima, which is home to the iconic floating torii. The Seto Inland Sea borders the prefecture, so delectable seafood can be found just about anywhere. Some of the most scenic views in the country can be found here, too, from mountainous landscapes to sprawling ocean views. Hiroshima is also known for its Peace Memorial Park, where there’s an eye-opening museum and countless monuments that educate travelers on the events of WWII. Today, Hiroshima stands as a symbol of peace and welcomes its visitors with open arms and a desire to spread love all over world. It’s a thriving prefecture that should be on everyone’s list!
Miyajima
Miyajima is home to one of the three most scenic views of Japan and friendly, free roaming deer. Wandering around the famous Itsukushima Shrine and taking the ropeway to the top of Mount Misen are just a couple things that makes Miyajima such a memorable place.
Peace Memorial Park
The Peace Memorial Park serves as a commemoration of those who lost their lives from the world’s first nuclear attack in 1945. There are many monuments to see within the park as well as the Peace Memorial Museum. The park is not only a memorial for the victims, it also stands as a reminder for how inhumane nuclear weapons are and spreads the message of “No more Hiroshimas.”
Onomichi
This quiet city that lies on one of the many islands along the Seto Inland Sea is a popular day trip from mainland Hiroshima. Known for its lemons, cats, and temples, I had a very peaceful day walking around eating unique food, seeing historical landmarks, and petting adorable cats.
Cafes & Cuisine
Anyone who knows me or has been following my travels for a while knows that I love finding themed cafes. I happened to find a couple in Hiroshima and I believe they deserve their own post. I also talk about the specialties in Hiroshima and must-eat dishes!
Dreamination
One of Hiroshima’s most beloved winter festivals is Dreamination, which is a huge light show on Peace Boulevard. I list some of my favorite designs and talk about how this festival came to be.
